These favorite summer berries were prized for their therapeutic properties in ancient Rome, and they are packed with vitamin C. An average serving of strawberries gives twice the recommended daily adult intake of this immunity-boosting vitamin. The berries are also rich in fibre for a healthy heart and digestive system (not if you juice them mind). Strawberries contain ellagic acid, a phytochemical shown to help fight cancer and destroy some of the toxins in cigarette smoke and polluted air. Their B-vitamin content makes them useful for supporting the nervous system and fighting stress-related conditions, as well as building resistance to disease. Plus they also help to protect the skin's elasticity by supporting collagen production - is there anything this wonder fruit can't do?
After yesterdays 'veggie juice incident' I decided to give my body a treat and make a strawberry smoothie. The following ingredients make enough for 2 people.
150g fresh strawberries, hulled
1 banana, peeled and chopped
1 small pot plain bio-yoghurt
150ml of unsweetened soya milk (or semi-skimmed if you prefer)
fresh mint leaves to decorate.
Place all the ingredients in a blender and whizz until smooth. Serve in tall glasses topped with mint leaves. Drink immediately and enjoy. I know this one won't be as healthy as some of the others i have made, and definitely more fattening, but it did taste 10 times better! If you don't like your smoothies too thick, just add more milk. Rating 5/5.
